Learn Casino Craps: Hedging Your Craps Bets

Friday, November 20th, 2009

“Hedging” is making one bet to “protect” another.  You will frequently see players make a $5 (or $10) Pass Line bet and then hedge it with a $1 Any Craps bet.  If the shooter rolls anything but a craps on the come-out roll, the Any Craps bet loses (but it’s only $1, so it’s not too painful).  If the shooter rolls a craps on the come-out, the $5 Pass Line loses, but the $1 Any Craps wins (except for the “bar” number, in which case it’s a push).  The casino odds for Any Craps are 7:1, so the player wins $7 for the $1 bet.  When hedging, the player believes that the $1 Any Craps bet “protects” the $5 Pass Line bet from losing on the come-out roll.

Another less common hedge bet is using a $1 Hard 6 or 8 to help protect the player’s Don’t Pass with Odds.  For example, suppose you make a $5 Don’t Pass bet, the point is 8, and you then lay $12 in Odds against the point (i.e., with the $5 Don’t Pass and $12 Odds, your total bet is $17).  You then make a $2 Hard 8 bet to essentially take away one of the ways you can lose the Don’t Pass.  If the shooter makes her point by rolling 8 the Hardway (i.e., 4-4), then your Don’t Pass with Odds lose.  However, in this example, the shooter made her point by rolling 8 the Hardway, so your $2 Hard 8 bet wins.  Casino odds for the Hard 8 are 9:1, so you win $18.  Therefore, your $17 Don’t Pass and Odds bets lose but you’re “protected” because your Hard 8 bet wins $18.  The bad news about this hedge bet is, if the shooter makes her point of 8 the easy way (i.e., 6-2, 2-6, 5-3, or 3-5), then you lose both your Don’t Pass with Odds and Hard 8 bets.

Hedging sounds fairly smart, right?  In the short-term, maybe.  In the long-term, definitely not.  If you hit a 20-minute stretch of time where the distribution goes crazy and every other roll produces a 2, 3, or 12, then maybe a $1 Any Craps is a good hedge to protect your Pass Line bet.  Maybe.  If it works and you win a few Any Craps bets, then the table will think you’re a genius.  But in the long-term, you’ll lose.  The crazy variance in the distribution that shows a 2, 3, or 12 every other roll won’t last long.  Therefore, if you consistently hedge your bets, you’ll lose over time.  Why?

For the player (i.e., not the casino), craps is a negative expectation game.  Everything on the table (except the true odds bet) is a negative for the player.  No possible combination of negative-expectation bets exists that yields a positive expectation.  In other words, you can’t mix two or more negative-expectation bets into something that’s in your favor.  You just can’t.  It’s important to understand that concept.  Using a bad bet (e.g., Any Craps or a Hardway) to hedge a good bet (e.g., Pass Line or Don’t Pass) only makes the good bet worse.

If you can’t control the urge to use hedges, then do it carefully.  You might think, “What difference does it make?  It’s only a buck.  A measly buck is worth it to protect my $5 Pass Line.”  That kind of thinking will take you straight to the poor house.  Those measly $1 chips quickly add up over a few hours of play.  Before you know it, you’ve tossed away $50 on hedge bets and you’re scratching your head wondering where your money went.

Learn Casino Craps: What Are the Pieces of a Craps Table?

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

If you’ve ever walked through a casino, you’ve probably seen a craps table, but have you ever wondered what a craps table actually is?  What does it comprise, what are its components?

The biggest and most obvious part of the table is the bed.  Casino craps tables are generally available in 8-foot, 10-foot, or 12-foot lengths.  Along the top edge of the bed is a continuous Padded Rail on which the players can lean.  Standing at a craps table for long periods of time can become tiresome for the player, so the padded rail allows the players to rest or change body positions to ease the stress.  After all, the casino doesn’t want players to walk away simply because their feet and knees hurt.  Obviously, the casino wants players at the table as long as possible.

Adjacent to the padded rail is the wooden Chip Rack, which is usually two-racks deep with dividers about every 12-to-16 inches.  The dividers separate the chip rack into individual sections for the players.

Along the outer perimeter is a little shelf called a Drink Rail.  As the name implies, this is where players place their drinks.  Drink glasses and bottles are not allowed on the Padded Rail because of the risk of spillage onto the layout.  Not only do spills make a big mess on the layout (which the casino has to pay to get cleaned), spills delay the game which digs into the casino’s profits.  Cigarette ashtrays are also placed on the Drink Rail.

Inside the bed is the Table Layout with all the numbers and boxes onto which the players’ chips are placed.  The felt can be any color depending on the casino’s specifications.  Common colors are green, blue, and sometimes red.  Special designs and patterns can be incorporated into the layout to match the casino’s theme.  The area on the outer edge of the layout is called the Apron.

Rubber material lines the inside wall of the bed and is called Rail Rubber.  Below the rail rubber on each inside end of the table is a 6-to-8-inch wide piece of Pyramid Rubber.  This is the part of the table with all the little pyramids or spikes that are specially designed to randomly deflect the dice.  Casinos have a rule that a player must “hit the back wall” when tossing the dice.  This rule ensures the dice hit the pyramid rubber, thereby, preventing anyone from controlling the outcome of a dice roll.  Regardless of what you hear, read, or see at a live craps table, no one (NO ONE!) can consistently control the outcome of a craps roll when the dice hit the pyramid rubber.  They just can’t.  (Please read my other articles about the silly notion of “dice control” or “dice setting.”)

On the inner side of the bed across from the dealers and boxman is a mirror about 8 inches wide that runs the length of the table.  The mirror allows the dealers and boxman to see the palm side of the player’s tossing hand.  The boxman can easily see if a player is cheating by “palming” the dice, trying to introduce a crooked pair into the game.

Cut into the table layout in front of the boxman is a Money Slot for the Money Drop Box.  The money slot is about 3/8-inch wide and about 3 inches long, which is just the right size for pushing bills down into the drop box.  The boxman uses a Paddle to push the money through the slot into the money box that’s attached to the underside of the bed.  (That’s where the term “boxman” came from.)

The stickman controls a small bowl that rests on the tabletop against the wall directly in front of the stickman.  This Dice Bowl (or Dice Boat) simply holds the extra dice that are not in play.  When a new game starts, the stickman dumps the unused dice onto the table and uses his stick (or whip) to push them all (usually 6 or 8) to the next shooter.  The shooter then selects two that she thinks are lucky, and then the stickman pulls the remaining dice back and puts them in bowl.  The bowl is usually made of clear acrylic or wood.

Also considered part of a craps table are the Puck and Buttons.  The ON/OFF puck (white for the ON side, black for the OFF side) is used simply to indicate whether a new game is in progress.  If a new game is about to start, the puck is turned to the OFF side.  If a game is in progress, the puck is turned on its ON side and placed in the appropriate number box on the layout to indicate the “point” for the current game.  Small buttons about the size of a quarter are used to indicate whether a player’s bets are off or on, or whether a certain type of bet is a “buy” or “lay.”  Each button has one word engraved in it, either OFF, ON, BUY, or LAY.  Buttons help the dealer, boxman, and the eye-in-the-sky keep track of players’ bets.

Now you know all the components of a craps table!  The more you know, the more confident you’ll be when you walk up to a table.  The more confident you are, the less likely the dealers will steer you down the wrong path by enticing you to make bets with high house advantages.

Casino Games: Legit or Trickery?

Many people around the world play at online casinos, and that’s fine if it’s your only source of gambling. However, online casinos are nowhere near as close to the real thing when it comes to simulation. Take Craps for example. Do you have a good craps strategy? The casino determines what number rolls by using a random number generator. However, just how random is random? If you have been in a casino, you know that every single person at a table has a unique rolling pattern. Some stack the dice and casually vault them into the air. Others shake them up and rocket them to the back wall, while other frequently launch the dice off the table or fall short of the back wall. There are even players who change their rolling pattern every roll or point.

An online casino does not have the ability to simulate this. Sure, they can manipulate the random number generator, but there’s still no way to accurately simulate table action. Having programmed, I know that a random number generator is not all that random. Worse, if the computer simply “picks a number”, it is not even a proper setup to being with. Let’s keep looking at Craps. Does the casino have a random number generator that simply picks a number between one and twelve? If so, all the numbers have an even shot at coming out, which is against true probability. Perhaps they list out all probable combinations and then the computer selects one. This would be a little more accurate, probability wise, but it still lacks the real randomness of live action—and weird events are more likely to ensue.

What I’m about to tell you is true and happens more frequently that one would imagine. A tester recently played at an online casino (online casino craps) to monitor number frequency in the field. Within the span of just 150 rolls, the computer rolled 11 non- field numbers in a row and then followed it up a handful of rolls later by rolling 12 non-field numbers in a row. What’s the big deal you ask? Well, first, the field has a 44.5% chance of winning on every roll and second; the probability of throwing 11 non-field rolls in a row is .0015%. The probability of throwing 12 non-field numbers in a row is .0008%. These events should happen once every 667 rolls and once every 1176 rolls respectively, yet both where seen within a handful of rolls from each other within the 150 rolls monitored.

Try computer roulette or free download Roulette while you’re at it!

Can a Person Really Learn to Control the Dice in Craps?

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

Online casino players know that there are always a wide variety of games available online for them to enjoy. This includes the traditional table games, such as blackjack, pai gow, various poker games, craps and roulette, as well as a wide variety of slots. Craps is one of the faster paced games that casinos offer and has become the most popular game in history when considering money wagered.

Regular craps players will often comment that craps is a game that they will play forever but never master. This take on craps is attributed to the fact that many believe that lady luck is the ultimate decision maker in this fast paced dice game. However, there are a few individuals who believe otherwise – and have the winnings to prove it.

Author and gaming guru, Frank Scoblete, has recently released a DVD titled “Golden Touch: Beat Craps by Controlling the Dice”. On his website, Scoblete discusses how he has learned his techniques from a man that he believes to be the best of the best, the Captain, king of the craps tables and offers us excellent insight on the best craps betting strategy.

For those of you who are not familiar with the Captain or his past successes, this is a man who had reportedly won somewhere in the general vicinity of $12 million dollars during a period of about 25 years. He ran with a crew of 22 other phenomenal casino craps players but he was considered the leader of the group.

Evidently, he has disclosed his secrets to Scoblete, who has taken the time to master these techniques of dice control enough to at least develop an intricate DVD that features controlled throws of the dice, completely unedited.

Since craps is really a game that is dependent upon the shooter, then the shooter has some form of control over the ultimate outcome. Obviously, if the shooter just randomly throws the dice each time, there will be no clue as to how or where they will fall. However, if the shooter is a more methodical thrower, this person may actually be able to up the odds for the players.

Just like the regulars mentioned above, the Captain and Scoblete believe that you cannot win at craps by simply using some type of betting system because the game is much too random for that. That is, unless, of course, the dice can be controlled to some degree. With practice, they can be. So, to all of you craps shooters out there, remember, practice makes perfect!  So it’s time to fine-tune your craps bets.
