Slash and the Gibson Les Paul

Pretty much everybody would love to be a guitar hero. Standing proudly onstage, thrashing out blistering power chords loud enough to make the paint peel from the walls. And there are a number of truly great electric guitars that have stood the test of time.

One of the most famous electric guitars is the Fender Stratocaster. Originally designed back in 1954 the Fender Stratocaster was the guitar of choice for Jimi Hendrix who played left handed. This is the electric guitar chosen by Pete Townsend of the Who and guitar god Eric Clapton. The Fender Stratocaster continues to be as popular today as it ever was and a whole new generation of guitarists are discovering this great, iconic instrument.

Another popular and well known model of guitar from Fender is the Telecaster. This guitar preceded the Stratocaster, being first produced as the Broadcaster in late 1949. There are and have been many well known and talented guitarists who like to play Fender Telecasters. Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones is probably one of the most famous guitarists who chooses to play Telecasters.

If we are talking about classic guitars we must of course mention the fantastic Gibson Les Paul. This is another design classic, first produced back in the 1950s and made ever since. Jimmy Page, of Led Zeppelin and Yardbirds fame, is just one guitarist who chose the Gibson Les Paul. Another great guitarist who made the sound of this instrument famous in the song ‘Alright Now’ was the lat Paul Kossoff of the band Free.

Since I’ve mentioned two great Fender guitars I should give a mention to a second Gibson. I could have chosen the great Gibson ES335, a personal favourite and popular with many great guitarists including BB King, but instead I’ve picked the exceptional Gibson SG. This great electric guitar with its distinctive looks was first introduced in the early 1960s initially to compete with the popular Fender Stratocaster. This is the guitar of choice for Angus Young, lead guitarist and songwriter in the Australian rock band ACDC. This great instrument was also the guitar used by Tony Iommi, guitarist with seventies rock band Black Sabbath.

Today there are many great electric guitars, but lots of these are copies of these four iconic models which, for me, are the best there is.

How does Guitar Hero match up to real guitar playing?

Ever since the release of the first game, the Guitar Hero games have taken the world by storm, seeing a spin off franchise Rock band, clothing, toy figures and its own line of plastic Gibson and Fender guitars. So the question is: has Guitar Hero energised the music industry? Or put it on the path to destruction?

The charges:

  • Less people are picking up Guitar Hero rather than real instruments. Some people are never going to pick up a guitar, but it has gotten a few people to try out an instrument for real. So people who had never given a second thought to picking up a musical instrument are now doing just that. With some ‘musos’ saying it is stopping people playing guitar might as well claim that about all video games.
  • It’ll never match playing a real gig. It could well be the closest thing for some people to getting up onstage. Like all video games, it puts the player in situation where they can live out different lives as ninjas, footballers and now, rock stars. Sure, Guitar hero players might never know the joy of rocking out with guitars onstage, but then, thats there loss.
  • It will damage the music industry. When the game was first anounced, the record companies were scared about music sales going down- as usual. But in truth, the exact opposite has happened. It allows players to hear music they might not have before and gives bands more exposure. The newest game – Metallica, will expose the band to an even bigger audience than before. Metallica isnt the only one to do this, as AC/DC and Aerosmith have done the same, with Van Halen set to follow suit sometime this year.

After real Electric guitars? Go to these people.
