The Defias humans in Elwynn Forest are a reliable place to start. If you are in Dun Morogh, stick with the trolls. They will give money and items which can be sold.
Quests are another way to earn alot of money. Also, once you hit level 10, dont just rush forward to the next area. You can now travel around the world. Try questing in the other starting areas at this point. It doesnt take much time now that you are higher level than most of the mobs in that area. If geared properly, you should be making plenty of money. Doing this also builds reputation which is important later in your game. It is a smart idea to go to the other areas while you still get experience and run their quests.
Once you reach around level 35 you should be able to start soloing Deadmines. Deadmines is one of my favorite places for grinding gold. Get the largest bags available, then as you go drop any white or gray items that you get. Sometimes I cant carry some of the greens i get, because of bag space. Check the auction house before you go to know what to drop and what to keep.

Taking time to learn to use the auction house can be rewarding inthe game. If you watch the auction house, you can flip items for profit. Flipping is just a matter of finding items that are selling way under market value, buying them, then reposting them at a higher price. Usually, I re sell items double what i payed for them. Also, make sure you take into account any auction house fees you paid, as these cut into your profits.
You can make alot gold by choosing the right professions. If you are interested in making money stick with the gathering professions. Skinning and Mining are both easy to level and profitable. when mining you should check your auction house to see if raw ores or smelted ores sell better. This is can vary by server. Often I have found, selling the raw ores is more profiatable. However I have seen some servers where smelted ores generally sold better.
Herbalism can also be very profitable especially with the Inscriptioning introduced in WoTLK.
