You were so excited as Christmas approached and you knew the Nintendo Wii was being released in the United States. You knew which box contained your new gaming console under the tree. After ripping off the wrapping paper you see the familiar Nintendo insignia and the pristine picture of the white unit on the box. Diving into the contents of the box you find the console, the wires to hook it up, the controllers and Wii Sports, the penultimate game of the original 33 game library. 

Immediately you set up the system and press the power button. The television monitor comes alive with the sounds and colors that make your face up. The very first thing you encounter is the Wii Menu. Configure like a series of television channels you surf through the disc channel, Forecast channel (weather), Mii channel, News channel, photo channel and the Wii Shop channel. Not even knowing where to begin, you find yourself on the Mii channel creating an avatar style character that looks just like you. Your Mii has the same hair style, eye color, skin tone, and even the clothes you are wearing. Now that you are literally inside the game you want to get to the games that you’ve been craving for so long.

The menu for Wii games comes on the screen and you select the baseball game. There you are standing next to home plate, your Mii waits with a bat in hand to throw the first pitch.  Meanwhile, you are in your living room with the controller standing in a traditional batters stance. The ball on the television screen gets released by the pitcher and is floating your way. At the precise moment, you swing the controller as if you were swinging a real baseball bat. The Nintendo Wii analyzes your movements because of the sensors in the controller and the Mii swings their bat at the exact same moment, sending the ball up, up and away into the bleacher over the right field wall. Home Run! You find yourself dancing in your pajamas in the middle of your living room. Your entire family is staring at you like you have just lost your mind. 

You invite one of your family members to give one of the Wii games a try. He steps up to the plate and goes through the baseball motions. After striking out, you laugh at the family member with a look of superiority on your face. Even though they struck out, they are determined to get a hit. For the rest of the evening, your entire family is hovered around the television playing Wii games, be it tennis, golf, bowling, boxing or baseball. Everyone has their favorite game. Your mom is happy because instead of sitting in front of the television like a zombie, you are active and jumping around. The Nintendo Wii was the best investment your family has ever made and Wii sports is the best of the Wii games.

There is no denying the popularity and success of the Nintendo Wii. It will only continue to grow and will inspire game makers to truly push the boundaries of virtual reality.
