If you’re anything like me then you do not play video games. I actually kind of hate video games to be honest. In my opinon they are a complete waste of time. So then why am I writing about this video game? Because in my opinion Beatles Rock Band Game (and to a lesser extent the other Rock Band games) is not just a game, it’s a real interactive musical learning tool.
I’m not really talking about the guitar and bass guitar thing. I actually think the guitar part of the game is really lame because it has nothing to do with playing real guitar and little to do with the songs you’re playing. It has nothing to do with playing guitar because playing real guitar is about 100 times harder than just pressing a few color coded buttons and it has very little to do with the music because I have found that the colors rarely change at the same time as any musical changes in the songs.
It’s the singing and the drumming aspects of the game that excite me. Both of these parts of the game have a direct relationship to really doing these things “in real life” and the relationship to the music is also far more direct.
If you sing in key and with the correct timing then you’ll do well. It’s true that you do not have to sing the real lyrics (you can simply hum the melody if you want to) but I don’t think that’s a big deal. What matters is hitting the right notes at the right time. I think Beatles Rock Band is really an excellent to improve your ability to sing.
When you play the drums on the highest level you are really hitting every single drum hit that is in the actual song! No, it’s not exactly like playing a real drum set, but it’s close enough to be pretty effective for practicing. In fact, I’ve heard of people moving quite smoothly from playing Rock Band drums into playing real drums.
I definitely recomend The Beatles Rock Band as an excellent present for any real Beatles fan along with (obviously) The Beatles Remastered Box Sets & The Beatles USB.
