The turn – the second to last card of the round to be dealt on the table – may not necessarily hold a lot of weight in some other versions of poker compared to the flop or the river, but in Omaha poker, it is a sure sign of how you should go forward and finish off your play. Once you reach the turn and have that second to last card on the table, it is now the time to really get in and start your aggressive tactics that you may have been holding back from earlier.
The reason for this change lies in the fact that by reaching the turn, you have a few more tools at your disposal than before. For starters, you now have a better understanding of all of the players that are left at this point and what they may be willing to do to try to acquire the pot. By actively observing each player throughout the game, you can conclude what he or she may be holding in his or her hand at this stage than otherwise significantly easier.
At the same time, you also personally have a better idea of what cards you may be able to use to make your own hand. With four cards on the table and four cards in your hand, you now have a total of eight of the possible nine cards to choose from – that means you are looking at nearly 90% of your hand already being complete.
By seeing what comes in the turn, you can decide how strong your own hand is. Moreover, by judging how well you feel the other players may be doing, you can also get a good idea of how well you could hold up towards the end when the river comes. As a general rule of thumb, the less players still in at this stage, the more aggressively you can play. While it is true that chances are the remaining player(s) may have strong hands as well, they are also thinking the same thing of you. By using this to your advantage, you can put the pressure on them and perhaps even get them to back out and fold even at this stage in the late game. If you’ve been observing your opponents and they seem particularly hesitant at this point, push them for what they may be worth as chances are they’re not as confident and fully satisfied of their hands and pulling through to the end as they are trying to seem, even with the river.
By playing aggressive and using a solid strategy, you can set yourself up with a strong foundation for the remainder of the game and help put yourself in a powerful position when the river comes. Don’t be afraid to go to the extreme if you feel you have the strength to pull it through, but at the same time, don’t exceed your limit if you don’t feel you can hold up as even a moderately strong hand could easily be defeated if you’re not careful.
